City and County Governments
The City of Greenwood as well as Greenwood-Leflore and Carroll County leaders are committed to forging strategic alliances that will provide new businesses, expanding existing industries, and entrepreneurs with the relevant resources they need to succeed.
Both counties are served by well-trained, state-of-the-art volunteer fire departments, while the City of Greenwood has a full time paid department. Extensive training programs coupled with excellent equipment enables the City of Greenwood, including the Greenwood-Leflore Industrial Park, to maintain a class 4 fire insurance rating.
The Greenwood Police Department has 50 full-time officers and 25 auxiliaries. Itta Bena has a force of ten full-time police officers. Greenwood is also home to Troop D of the Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol. The District headquarters employs fifteen support personnel and 54 sworn officers who patrol a ten county area.
The Leflore County Civic Center is the largest facility of its type in
northwest Mississippi. It includes a 9,756 sq. ft. arena and a 3,441 sq. ft.
convention/ meeting area. The arena of the Civic Center seats nearly
3,000 for a wide range of events... from trade shows to basketball games.
Healthcare
With 260 beds, the Greenwood-Leflore Hospital is the largest and best-equipped medical center in northwest Mississippi.
The most advanced procedures available for patient treatment are a part of the hands-on, high-tech approach at our area hospitals. From radioactive seed implantation for prostate cancer and holmium laser treatment for kidney stones, to endoscopic sinus surgery and vascular and thoracic procedures, patients receive world-class care. Specialty clinics, from orthopedics to children’s medicine, are an important part of caring for area patients.
Utilities
The City of Greenwood operates a non-profit public power company. Greenwood Utilities has been providing low cost electricity for residential and industrial use since 1904. The company operates two steam power plants with a combined capacity of 70 megawatts, and through interconnection with Entergy, an additional 80 megawatts can be delivered. Greenwood Utilities serves the immediate City of Greenwood area. Both Delta Electric Power Association and Entergy provide abundant and reliable power to the remaining areas of Leflore and Carroll Counties.
